Job Description: 

Daubert Chemical Company is seeking an experienced first-shift Formulator at its chemical manufacturing plant located near Midway Airport in Forest View, IL. The Formulator operates chemical processing equipment to formulate standard or custom products according to product specifications. Main responsibilities are to follow the production schedule, follow batch sheet instructions to accurately and efficiently set up, weigh, measure, and mix raw materials in proper sequence; adding ingredients either manually or with pumps and meters; accurately record required information on batch sheet; rotate stock, track inventory, submit samples to QA. Prepare approved finished product for container, label and shipping. Overall, be adept in learning and safely executing formulating procedures for the Production Department.

  • Performs activities to safely clean, secure and maintain equipment and work areas as required.  Participate in housekeeping (e.g. sweep, mop, dust, put items away in proper areas) in the facility according to 5S.
  • Follows, without exception, all work instructions, SOP’s, and safety rules, including use of all proper PPE and other safety equipment. Use of a respirator is required for certain batches.
  • Work mandatory scheduled weekday and weekend overtime as needed. Work adjusted hours as business necessitates. 
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned, e.g. participation in rotational safety committee. 

Experience & Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Minimum 3 years chemical manufacturing experience in a batch environment with chemical reactions. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude; experience with valves, pumps, flow meters, condensers, sensors, PLC's filters, etc. 
  • Good problem-solving ability; makes efficient use of time within shift directives. 
  • Be able to demonstrate accurate math calculations. 
  • Ability to be trained and safely operate a forklift. 
  • Works well within a team and able to follow specific directions.
  • Punctuality and excellent attendance are expected and required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The worker is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is industrial and usually moderate.

The successful candidate makes all buying decisions, negotiates pricing based on market trends, builds rapport with vendors and suppliers, ensures effective policy and procedures and efficient workflow of staff, and provides reports to management. This position will be primarily responsible for all strategic and tactical purchasing/sourcing activities (both internationally and domestic) for raw materials and report to the Executive VP of Operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include, but not limited to the following.

Establish and maintain strategic relationships with suppliers who can support the company with quality products, competitive prices, and superior service. Communicate with suppliers directly regarding raw material pricing, quality, and availability. 

Evaluates raw material requirements received from the requirements planning report and releases purchase orders to provide production with necessary raw materials for the production schedule.  

Ensures the proper flow of purchase orders and invoice processing from Purchasing to Accounting. 

Routinely collects timely market information and trends from various industry sources on raw materials (pricing activity, supply issues, market dynamics, etc.) and communicates to senior management.

Continuously seeks alternate sources for supply of key raw materials for evaluation and approval by R&D.

Negotiate the cost of all materials and resolve service level issues at the vendor level. Negotiate favorable terms, volume discounts, cost reductions, and supplier agreements.

Works with supplier and co-workers to resolve problems with out-of-spec raw materials, incorrect quantity or item received. Arranges for rejected goods to be returned and replaced. Initiates and manages Corrective Action Request (CAR) from supplier as needed.

Ensure that procurement activities strictly adhere to company compliance policies & procedures.

Evaluate vendor performance including cost and quality value, delivery, innovation, and customer service. Periodically audits and visits key existing and potential suppliers. Respond to vendor social responsibility audits as requested.

Fosters close working relationships with internal departments and team members e.g., work with Shipping Department to obtain favorable freight terms.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises one employee in the Purchasing Department in accordance with all applicable laws and company policies. Coordinates activities of purchasing department to ensure an efficient workflow.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES   

Bachelor's degree required; business management or supply chain discipline is highly preferred.

A minimum of five years related purchasing management role at a director level with supervisor experience is required; experience in a manufacturing environment is required; specialty chemical industry or products experience a strong plus. License/certification in Purchasing or Supply Chain is favorable.

Experience and proficiency in managing a complex portfolio of globally sourced materials with a minimum annual spend of $50M spanning several hundred raw material SKU’s.

Knowledgeable and experienced with ISO compliance requirements.

Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal, analytical and presentation skills. Must read, speak and write English fluently. 

Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Gather and analyze information and propose alternative solutions. Key contributor in group problem-solving solutions.

Demonstrate understanding of market factors that influence the cost of materials that we buy. Ability to be proactive in anticipating and mitigating risk factors and operational requirements.

Effective negotiator that drives optimal outcome for the business. Exhibits solid judgement along with decision making skills.

Possesses strong analytical skills, including price/cost analysis, forecasting, establishing appropriate safety stock levels, etc.

High degree of professional integrity, ethics and confidentiality.

Requires proficiency with MS Office suite of products. Advanced excel is required.
